FattBoy teardown

I ordered some FattBoys the other day – supposedly once of the most quiet and accurate silencers available for airguns… They’re 50mm in diameter, which means they have *plenty* of volume.. and that really helps in the department to silencing them… and I must admit, they must be the quietest silencers I’ve tried…

As it turns out it uses the same idea I have, to use a plastic conduit as the outer sleeve…

I undid the 2mm grub screws and removed the end cap – that revealed 4 equal length sections inside… the 2 closest to the barrel are the same and the 2 closest to the silencer exit are the same (I refer to these as the exit sections)

Here I’m starting to slide the first exit section out… not the 16 vent holes around the edge – all 4 sections have these… the pellet holes in the 2 exit sections are 9mm in diameter…

the 2 exit sections have a pink curler surrounded by some felt and that is held in place by 3 allen screws… All of this is surrounded by some layers of that green pot scrubber material…

The felt does not cover the whole length of the pink curler – the first 10mm are not covered…

Removing the Barrel attachment, reveals the 2 sections closes to the barrel

These first two sections are almost like the exit sections, except they don’t have any felt… the felt is replaced by a blue larger diameter curler… I’m guessing to create more free-air volume…

Below we see the whole thing disassembled.. barrel side on the right…

below is the end cap (it has another black end cover that I guess makes it a little more aesthetically pleasing.

Here I just turned all the sections around to show that they all have the same section plate (including the 16 smaller vent holes on the perimeter of the disc…

here’s a bit of a summary

One thing bugged me though.. if you look at the drawing on the left, you’ll notice that if all the sections are inserted and pushed against the barrel mount, it leaves a 9mm section between the last exit section and the end cap… that means the sections have up to 9mm of play inside the housing…

All in all I like the plastic pipe – it will allow me to mount a BT module on the inside… I really like this one, but would prefer it with the 40mm conduit pipe that has the 35mm ID.
