Some more info on ICU’s (Ignition Control Units)
Here are some common part numbers that different suppliers use for the Bosch 124 module (or it’s exact replacements):
Bosch: 0 227 100 124, 1 227 010 003, 1 227 010 005, 1 227 010 006, 1 227 010 039
Citroen: 96 048 070 80
GM: 90006499
Lucas: DAB 405
Magneti-Marelli: 940 038 508
Opel: 1208243
SAAB: 750 3600
Volvo: 1 332 584
Eventually the last and final one that is also compatible to ALL airheads with and without kickstarter is BMW part#: 12 14 2 325 284 (Temic #1885A2). The final combination I chose the latest option (such as on the 2474 R100RS 11/984 model ):
- coil: 12121243182 (also suggested: high current hot spark single coil with dual output (BMW part# 12-13-1-244-426 (Bosch 02210500203), also workable is Dyna brown coil with 1.5 ohms, 14K secondary, for 81-92 stock airheads)
- Spark plug: BOSCH W5DC (NGK BP7ES / Bosch W5DC / Bosch WR5DC+)
- Ignition Control Unit: 12142325284
- Enduralast suggests 6v Ignition Coils (x2) – BMW R Airhead; 12 13 1 243 452 / Bosch (Replaces smaller oe Bosch Coils 0 221 100 313, 0 221 101 003, 0 221 124 001, the 452 coils is 1.2ohm, 1.25mH, 13k84ohm secondary & 40-50kV )
From one of the Enduralast pages regarding compatible coils:
- Stock BMW points & condenser coils from 1970-1980
- Black coil BMW #: 12 13 1 351 584 Bosch part #: 0 221 100 022 (/5)
- Black coil BMW #: 12 13 1 243 452 Bosch part #: 0 221 101 003 (/6, /7, early 100)
- Black coil BMW #: 12 13 1 244 142 & 02-21 100 028 (R80RT, R100/T, CS, RS, RT)
uses hall sensor Siemens part No HKZ101 (replacement part: CYHME301)
datasheet: Siemens HKZ101 Hall sensor on BMW Ignition trigger
If your trigger unit has failed, the hall transistor can be replaced with one from a 79-85 VW, 78-83 Audi, or 79-82 Porsche. Take the old part with you when you go to the import car parts place, or cheaper yet, junk yard. A local parts place quoted me $95 for a new one in ’96 and their jobber’s part number was 30-1032. I THINK the Bosch number is 1237011052.
some of these HALL sensors might “fit”… http://www.dapco.com.cn/Upload/CRANK%20AND%20CAMSHAFT%20POSITION%20%20SENSOR.pdf

HEAVY-DUTY Ignition Module for ALL 1981through 1995 Airheads, $95.00 with bracket The ignition control module now controls the dwell time independently of the Hall sender,to improve the sometimes uneven startup and cold idle, especially. This also helps maintain accuracy as the old original parts in the Hall sender may wear.
The Boyer has always been a good ignition to consider when the tip of the pre-1979 camshaft was broken off. Now, with the new model with the updated ignition curve (ALSO available in a modified version for dual-plugging installations) (and supposedly now works OK with a slightly weak battery, low voltage that is, during starting), there is less reason to not recommend it.Below is the Boyer-Bransden Microdigital Electronic Ignition advance curve, courtesy of www.Boyerbransden.com and obtained from Stan Smith when he owned rockypointcycle.
